In the 1930s, Irish motor racing experienced a boom, with street circuits and self-built ‘Specials’ gaining popularity. One standout was the Statham-Ford Special, designed and built by George Statham in his garage, now the site of Pembroke Kilkenny. Powered by a Ford V-8 engine, it achieved major success, including a record win in the 1934 Phoenix Park Senior Race and a 7th-place finish at the prestigious 1935 Limerick Grand Prix.
Today, Pembroke Kilkenny honours this legacy. The hotel’s Stathams Bar and Restaurant is named after the original garage, and the restored Statham-Ford Special is proudly on display. Guests can learn about its history and even follow heritage driving routes inspired by the car’s original roads.
